Health Prediction in KP Astrology: 6th Cusp Sub Lord
Health prediction in KP astrology rests on the 1st house (body, vitality) and the 6th house (disease). Classical KP names houses 1, 5 and 11 for good health and cure, and houses 6, 8 and 12 as the adverse set for health. The sub lords of the 1st and 6th cusps decide whether health is promised, and joint Vimshottari periods time the stretches of illness and recovery.
Houses in Health Analysis
- 1st House - Physical body, constitution, vitality. The 1st cusp sub lord reveals the native's general health pattern.
- 5th House - Relief and cure. KP writers count the 5th among the houses whose signification ends an illness.
- 6th House - Disease and its cure. The 6th cusp sub lord decides whether illness will manifest and whether it will be cured.
- 8th House - Chronic illness, surgery, sudden health crises. Involvement of the 8th indicates conditions that last or require an operation.
- 11th House - Gain of health, the wish for recovery fulfilled.
- 12th House - Hospitalisation, bed rest, confinement. When the 12th is signified with the 6th and 8th, hospital stays are indicated.
Step 1: Read the 1st Cusp Sub Lord at Three Levels
The 1st cusp sub lord gives the general health verdict. It is read at three levels, and at each level you collect the houses that planet occupies and owns:
- The sub lord planet itself
- Its star lord (the lord of the nakshatra it sits in)
- Its own sub lord
Three steps, no fourth. Then apply the promise test:
- Any one of houses 1 or 11 in the chain (KP writers count 5 and 9 as well when the question is recovery) - good health is PROMISED
- Those houses together with 6, 8 or 12 - promised, with difficulty: sound health broken by spells of illness in the periods those adverse-house planets rule
- Houses 6, 8 and 12 only - good health is NOT PROMISED; the native is prone to ill health
Health Prediction in KP Astrology: The 6th Cusp Read Once
KP writing states illness and its cure as a pair on the same cusp: the 6th cusp sub lord signifying 1, 5 or 11 is cure; the same sub lord signifying 6, 8 or 12 is illness. Because both sides live on one planet, the cusp is read once, with one verdict that names both sides' houses. A 6th cusp sub lord connected to the 11th and the 8th does not produce two contradicting rows; it produces "cure promised, with difficulty", and the timing is kept per side: the periods of 1-5-11 significators bring relief, the periods of 6-8-12 significators bring the illness.
How the Adverse Houses Work
Classical KP states the adverse houses for health directly as 6, 8 and 12. They are not worked out mechanically from the favourable houses, and they never subtract from a promise. Their job is to annotate: a chain touching 1 and 12 together still promises health, and the 12th tells you hospital confinement may accompany it. Only a chain that touches 6, 8 and 12 and nothing else gives NOT PROMISED. The 5th earns its place among the cure houses because KP writers name it there, not by arithmetic from the 6th.
Identifying the Type of Disease
KP writers map the sign on the 6th cusp to the part of the body most vulnerable:
- Aries - Head, brain
- Taurus - Throat, neck
- Gemini - Lungs, arms, nervous system
- Cancer - Chest, stomach
- Leo - Heart, spine
- Virgo - Intestines, digestive system
- Libra - Kidneys, lower back
- Scorpio - Reproductive organs
- Sagittarius - Hips, thighs, liver
- Capricorn - Knees, bones, joints
- Aquarius - Ankles, circulatory system
- Pisces - Feet, lymphatic system
The significator planet colours the nature of the complaint (Saturn chronic and skeletal, Mars inflammatory and surgical, Mercury nervous). This is part of the KP tradition and useful to a practitioner. A written reading, however, never names a disease (asking whether you will get a named disease is declined, free of charge), and it never gives longevity or death timing; those are refusals, not omissions.
Timing of Illness and Recovery
Promise takes any one house; delivery takes all of them. Illness manifests in a Vimshottari period whose Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly cover houses 6, 8 and 12, each lord supplying a different house, with the Maha lord signifying at least one. Recovery arrives in a period whose lords jointly cover 1, 5 and 11. Dasha cannot bring an illness, or a cure, that the cusp did not promise.
Every period that clears the bar is listed in time order. KP gives no rule for ranking one qualifying period above another, so there is no favoured period, no percentage and no single date. Inside a qualifying period, candidate days come from transit agreement: the Sun for a period of months, the Moon for one of days, a day qualifying when that body's sign, star and sub lords are all among the period lords. Several days per period, unranked; transit corroborates, it never decides.
Surgery Prediction
Surgery is its own matter in KP writing, read from the 8th cusp sub lord with houses 6, 8 and 12, and delivered in a joint period covering all three. Mars, the karaka for cutting instruments, often appears among the significators, but a karaka is never necessary and never sufficient; house signification decides. Whether the patient recovers afterwards is a separate matter, read from the cure houses 1, 5 and 11.
Birth-Time Sensitivity
The 1st and 6th cusp sub lords can change within a few minutes of clock time. A responsible health reading states how far the recorded birth time could move before each of those sub lords changes, so you know how much weight the verdict can carry.
