Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage in KP Astrology
One of the most common questions in marriage prediction is whether a person will have a love marriage or an arranged marriage. KP astrology answers it in two readings from the same chart: the 7th cusp sub lord says whether marriage is promised at all, and its connection to the 5th house (romance) says whether that marriage is a love match. The 5th cusp sub lord then confirms or contradicts. No significator counting, no scores; a cusp, its sub lord and the houses it signifies.
The Key Principle: One Marriage Rule, Then a Second Reading
Classical KP writing does not give love marriage a different marriage rule. It gives one rule for marriage and a second reading on top of it:
- Marriage promised - The 7th cusp sub lord, read at three levels (the planet, its star lord, its sub lord) with the houses each occupies and owns, signifies any one of houses 2, 7 or 11. KP writers describe the plain form of this promise as marriage arranged by the family.
- Love marriage - The same sub lord is also connected to the 5th house. The romance and the marriage then share one source, and the marriage is a love marriage.
- Confirmation from the 5th cusp - The 5th cusp sub lord signifying 7 or 11 confirms a love marriage; signifying 6 or 12 says the romance does not become the marriage.
Houses in Play: 2, 7, 11 and the 5th
- 2nd House - Addition to the family; the spouse joining the household.
- 7th House - The marriage itself, the spouse, the legal bond. The 7th cusp is the cusp that decides.
- 11th House - Fulfilment of the wish; the union achieved.
- 5th House - Romance, courtship, the love affair that precedes a love marriage.
Houses 9 and 3 are sometimes cited for elders and relatives, but they are not part of the marriage rule; the arranged reading is simply the promise without the 5th.
Step 1: Read the 7th Cusp Sub Lord
Collect the 7th cusp sub lord's signification and apply the promise test:
- Signifies 2, 7 or 11 and is connected to the 5th - love marriage, PROMISED
- Signifies 2, 7 or 11 with no connection to the 5th - arranged marriage, PROMISED
- Signifies a required house alongside the adverse houses KP writing names for marriage (1, 6, 10 and 12) - PROMISED, with difficulty: the marriage happens, with delay, opposition or strain around it
- Connected to 1, 6, 10 or 12 exclusively, with no link to 2, 7 or 11 at any level - NOT PROMISED
Adverse houses never subtract from the promise. They are stated by KP writers for the matter and they annotate the verdict. Marriage and separation are a pair on the 7th cusp, and KP reads the pair once from that cusp: one verdict with both sides' houses named, never two contradicting rows.
Step 2: Confirm with the 5th Cusp Sub Lord
The 5th cusp sub lord is the second reading. It does not decide marriage; it decides whether the romance becomes the marriage:
- Signifies 7 or 11 - the love affair leads to marriage; a love marriage is confirmed
- Signifies 6 or 12 - the love affair does not reach marriage; the marriage the 7th cusp promises comes another way
- Signifies neither 7 nor 11, and neither 6 nor 12 - the second reading is silent, and the 7th cusp verdict stands on its own
Where the 7th cusp says love and the 5th cusp says not, a reading states the disagreement and leaves love or arranged unsettled; the verdict itself is the primary form's, with a note that KP gives this rule in more than one form and how many of the forms are promised.
Venus, the Moon and the Karakas
Venus is the karaka of love and the Moon of feeling, and either of them appearing as a significator of the 5th and 7th houses supports the reading. In KP a karaka is never necessary and never sufficient: house signification decides, and a karaka only supports. Counting how many planets appear in both the 5th and 7th significator lists is not a KP rule and does not make an indication "stronger".
Step 3: Timing the Marriage
A promised marriage takes place in a Vimshottari period whose Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly signify all of houses 2, 7 and 11, each lord contributing a different house, with the Maha lord signifying at least one of them. Promise needs any one house; delivery needs all of them. For a love marriage the same period is read for the 5th as well, so that the romance and the wedding fall in the same stretch.
Every period inside the horizon that meets the bar is listed in time order, unranked; classical KP gives no rule for naming one of them "the" period. Inside a delivering period, candidate days come from the Sun's and the Moon's transit in the star and sub of the period lords: several days per period, unranked. Transit corroborates, it never decides. If no period inside the horizon meets the bar, the reading says "promised, but no delivering period inside the horizon" rather than inventing one.
Parental Approval or Opposition
The love-versus-arranged rule already carries the family in it: the plain 2-7-11 promise is marriage arranged by the family, and the 5th house connection is the marriage the person chose. Whether the family agrees is a different matter from whether the marriage takes place. A love marriage the 7th cusp sub lord promises happens in its delivering period; a "with difficulty" annotation from the adverse houses is where opposition and delay show up. A reading does not derive a separate verdict on parents from cusps the marriage rule does not name.
Birth-Time Sensitivity
