Foreign Travel Prediction in KP Astrology: Houses 3, 9 and 12
Going abroad, whether for a short visit, a long posting or a permanent move, is one of the matters Krishnamurti Paddhati answers with a fixed rule. Foreign travel prediction in KP astrology turns on the sub lord of the 12th cusp and on houses 3, 9 and 12; settlement, visas and work abroad are read as separate matters with their own cusps and houses. Every verdict is two-valued: PROMISED or NOT PROMISED.
Houses for Foreign Travel: 3, 9 and 12
- 3rd House - The journey itself: departure, movement, the ticket and the order to go.
- 9th House - Long-distance and overseas travel, the far destination.
- 12th House - Foreign lands, life away from the place of birth. Its cusp decides the matter.
Which cusp decides a matter, and which houses it requires, are not inferred chart by chart. They come from a house-grouping table compiled from classical KP writing: foreign travel and foreign settlement from the 12th cusp with houses 3, 9 and 12.
Settlement Abroad
The 4th house is home and homeland and the 12th is life away from it, but the compiled table does not read settlement from the 4th cusp. The verdict is read from the 12th cusp sub lord with houses 3, 9 and 12, the same houses as travel: a settlement is a journey that does not turn back. Permanent residency or a green card is a matter of its own: classical KP writing reads it from the 10th cusp sub lord signifying 5, 9 and 11, timed by a period whose lords jointly cover those houses. Staying in the motherland has a rule of its own too, the 12th cusp sub lord signifying 2, 8 and 11. Where the writing gives a rule in more than one form, a reading judges every form and states whether they agree.
Step 1: Read the 12th Cusp Sub Lord at Three Levels
Take the planet that is sub lord of the 12th cusp. Read it at three levels: the planet itself, its star lord, and its sub lord. At each level, collect the house that level's planet occupies and the houses it owns. Nothing else is counted, and there is no fourth level.
- If any of houses 3, 9 or 12 appears in that list, foreign travel is promised. One required house is enough.
- If none of them appears, for example a sub lord connected only to the 1st and 4th, the homeland side of the chart, foreign travel is not promised.
- Classical KP writing states no separate adverse set for foreign travel, so the verdict turns on the required houses alone. Where a matter does carry stated adverse houses, they never subtract: a sub lord signifying a required house and an adverse house together still gives PROMISED, annotated with difficulty.
A birth chart can only be judged from a correct birth time, and a cusp sub lord can change within minutes. A KP reading therefore states how far the recorded time could move before the 12th cusp sub lord changes.
Step 2: The Significator Table
List the significators of houses 3, 9 and 12 in the classical grades: A, planets in the star of an occupant of the house; B, the occupants; C, planets in the star of the house lord; D, the house lord. When a higher grade is empty the next one promotes. The grades are an order of preference, not marks to be added up; the table tells you which dasha lords deserve examination.
Rahu is the traditional karaka of foreign lands, and its periods often coincide with journeys. In KP, though, a karaka is never necessary and never sufficient: house signification decides, and Rahu counts through its own occupation and star lord, plus the planets that conjoin it, aspect it and own the sign it sits in.
Step 3: Timing of Foreign Travel
A promised journey is delivered by a Vimshottari period whose Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly signify all of houses 3, 9 and 12, each lord supplying at least one different house, and the Maha lord signifying at least one of them. Promise takes any one house; delivery takes all of them, and a period cannot deliver what the 12th cusp has not promised. Every period inside the horizon that passes is listed in time order, unranked; KP singles out no period and gives no percentage.
Travel for a particular purpose is its own matter with its own cusp and houses. A job abroad is given in more than one form: the 12th cusp sub lord with 3, 6, 9 and 12, or the 2nd cusp with 2, 6, 9, 11 and 12, though a reading judges it from the 10th cusp with 3, 6, 9, 10 and 12. A visa is read from the 3rd cusp with 3, 9, 11 and 12. Study abroad is read from the 9th cusp with 4, 9, 11 and 12, or from the 12th cusp with 3, 6, 9, 11 and 12. Where KP writers give a rule in more than one form, a reading judges every form. The 11th house, the granted wish, is what turns an application into an approval.
Step 4: Candidate Days From Transit Agreement
Inside a delivering period, transit narrows the moment. The Sun points to the month within a period of months; the Moon to the days within a period of days. A day qualifies when that body's sign lord, star lord and sub lord are all among the period lords. Several candidate days per period are listed, unranked. Transit corroborates a period already chosen by the dasha; it never decides whether the journey happens.
Return or Permanent Stay
Coming back is read as a matter of its own, from the 12th cusp: KP writers give it with the travel houses 3, 9 and 12, and in another form with 3, 9 and 11; a return is a journey too. A permanent stay is the residency rule above, the 10th cusp sub lord with 5, 9 and 11, and staying put is the motherland rule, the 12th cusp sub lord with 2, 8 and 11. Ruling planets, which need a moment and a place of judgment, belong to horary work and birth-time correction; for a birth-chart reading they are shown for the record and decide nothing.
