Significance of the 1st House in KP Astrology
The 1st house in KP astrology, also called the Ascendant or Lagna, is the house of the native's physical body, personality, general health, vitality and overall approach to life. In Krishnamurti Paddhati the cusps are cast by the Placidus system with the KP ayanamsa, and the 1st cusp sub lord is the first thing a KP astrologer reads, because the same degree fixes every other cusp in the chart. The sign on the cusp describes build and temperament; the sub lord decides what the house delivers.

How the 1st Cusp Sub Lord Is Read
The sub lord of the 1st cusp is the deciding authority for Ascendant matters; the star lord of the cusp plays no part in the verdict. The sub lord is read at three levels, the planet itself, its star lord and its sub lord, and at each level the houses that planet occupies and owns are collected. Three levels, not four. The result is the list of houses the 1st cusp sub lord signifies.
For health and vitality, classical KP writing names houses 1, 5 and 11 as the required houses and 6, 8 and 12 as the adverse ones. The test is simple: if the sub lord signifies any one of 1, 5 or 11, sound health is promised, even when 6, 8 or 12 appear alongside. It is not promised only when the sub lord is connected to 6, 8 and 12 exclusively. Adverse houses never subtract from a promise; they annotate it. A sub lord signifying 1 and 8 together reads "promised, with difficulty": vitality is there, but with episodes of illness or setbacks along the way.
Favourable and Unfavourable Planets
In KP, a planet's natural benefic or malefic character is secondary to its significations. Jupiter as the 1st cusp sub lord is traditionally associated with optimism and a robust constitution, Venus with charm and an easy disposition, but the verdict comes from the houses each signifies at its three levels, not from the planet's reputation. A Jupiter whose star lord sits in the 8th still promises health if any level touches 1, 5 or 11; it simply promises it with difficulty.
Saturn as the Ascendant sub lord is read for a serious, disciplined personality and, where 6 or 8 appear in its chain, for complaints of the bones and joints. Mars gives an energetic, competitive temperament and, through 6 or 8, points to injury or surgery. Rahu and Ketu signify through the house they occupy, their star lord, and the planets that conjoin them or own the sign they sit in, so their effect depends entirely on those connections.
Connected Houses and Timing
Health has two sides in classical KP, and they are read from the 6th cusp as a pair: cure (houses 1, 5, 11) against illness (houses 6, 8, 12). Timing follows Vimshottari dasha. Take a 1st cusp sub lord Mercury in the star of Saturn, with Saturn occupying the 8th and Mercury itself owning the 5th: the planet level supplies the 5th, the star-lord level supplies the 8th, so health is promised, with difficulty. The difficulty has its own timing: a period of ill health is expected only when the Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly signify all of 6, 8 and 12, each lord contributing a different house and the Maha lord supplying at least one. Every period in the horizon that meets that bar is listed in time order, without ranking. Within a period, the days on which the Sun (for a period of months) or the Moon (for a period of days) transits in the sign, star and sub of the period lords are the candidate days: several, unranked. Transit corroborates; it never decides. Because the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, every reading also states how many minutes the recorded birth time could shift before the 1st cusp sub lord changes.
