The 3rd house in KP astrology governs younger siblings, courage, short journeys, communication, mental inclination and neighbours. It is the house of initiative and self-effort, often called the house of valour. Writing, correspondence and every form of communication, including modern media, fall under it.
The 3rd also covers neighbours, casual acquaintances and the immediate environment, and, together with the 5th, interest in arts, music and hobbies.
How the 3rd Cusp Sub Lord Is Judged
The sub lord of the 3rd cusp decides whether the house's matters are promised. It is read at three levels, the planet, its star lord and its sub lord, and at each level the houses that planet occupies and owns are collected. Each matter of the 3rd then has its own house group in classical KP writing: for writing and publishing, houses 3 and 11, with some passages adding the 10th, a rule given in more than one form that our readings judge on houses 3 and 11; for receiving news or documents, houses 3 and 11; for a change of residence, houses 3, 11 and 12. For younger siblings the writing states no house group: the 3rd cusp describes them, and a question about them is declined, with nothing charged.
The promise test is the same for each: if the sub lord signifies any one required house, the matter is promised, even when adverse houses appear beside it. It is not promised only when the sub lord is connected to adverse houses exclusively. Adverse houses are stated per matter by the writing, none are assumed where it states none, and they never subtract. The 12th, adverse to some matters elsewhere in the chart, is a required house when the question is a journey away from home or a change of residence. Where a required house sits next to an adverse one, the reading says "promised, with difficulty": a move that goes through after long delay.
Favourable and Unfavourable Planets
Mercury as the 3rd cusp sub lord is traditionally read for communication skill, writing ability and intellectual pursuits. Mars gives physical courage and a competitive spirit and is read for friction with siblings where the 6th appears in its chain. Jupiter is read for wisdom in speech and warm sibling relations.
Saturn as the sub lord is read for a large age gap, fewer siblings or a reserved style of communication; Rahu for unconventional thinking and foreign connections in communication; Ketu for detachment from siblings or abrupt, sometimes unclear expression. For writing and publishing combine 3 and 11 (or 3, 10 and 11 in the other form of the rule); for a change of residence 3, 11 and 12; for travel away from home 3, 9 and 12, the 9th supporting travel and the 12th the departure from one's present place; for a career in journalism, read from the 3rd cusp, 3, 9, 10 and 11. Promise asks for any one house of the group. Delivery asks for all of it: a Vimshottari period brings the matter only when its Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly signify every timing house, each lord contributing a different house and the Maha lord supplying at least one.
Example: 3rd cusp sub lord Mars in the star of the Moon, the Moon occupying the 11th. The star-lord level supplies the 11th, so writing and publication are promised. Periods whose three lords between them cover 3 and 11 are listed in time order, unranked, and within each the days on which the Sun (for a period of months) or the Moon (for a period of days) transits in the sign, star and sub of the period lords are the candidate days, several and unranked. Had no level of Mars touched 3 or 11, publication would be not promised. Had every level supplied only the 12th, a change of residence would still be promised, because 12 is a required house for leaving one's present place. Every reading also states how many minutes the recorded birth time could move before the 3rd cusp sub lord changes.
