Significance of the 4th House in KP Astrology

The 4th house in KP astrology represents the mother, immovable property, land, buildings, vehicles, formal education, domestic happiness and the ancestral home. It is the house of comfort and security, sitting at the nadir of the chart. Academic education up to graduation is governed by the 4th, as are peace at home and emotional contentment; in mundane astrology it stands for the homeland, agriculture and natural resources.

How the 4th Cusp Sub Lord Is Judged

The sub lord of the 4th cusp decides whether property is promised and describes home life and the mother. It is read at three levels, the planet, its star lord and its sub lord, and at each level the houses that planet occupies and owns are collected. Classical KP writing then gives a house group per matter: for buying property, houses 4, 11 and 12 (the 4th the asset, the 11th the gain, the 12th the money paid out); for a vehicle, the same group in some passages and 4, 9, 10 and 11 in others, a rule in more than one form that a reading judges form by form; for education, houses 4, 9 and 11. For the mother's welfare the writing states no house group: the 4th cusp describes her, and a question about it is declined, with nothing charged.

The promise test asks for any one of the required houses: a 4th cusp sub lord signifying the 11th alone promises property. It is not promised only when the sub lord is connected exclusively to the adverse houses the writing states for that matter. Those adverse houses are stated by KP writers per question, and where the writing states none, none are assumed. They never subtract from a promise; they annotate it, so a sub lord that signifies the 4th beside an adverse house reads "promised, with difficulty": a house bought after a dispute, a loan that drags, a registration that goes through late.

Favourable and Unfavourable Planets

Moon as the 4th cusp sub lord is naturally at home here, standing for the mother and the emotions, and is read for domestic contentment. Venus is read for a luxurious home, fine vehicles and comfort; Jupiter for a spacious home and a harmonious household.

Saturn is read for property that comes late, or old and large structures, and for a distant or dutiful relationship with the mother. Mars for property gained through effort or contest, and for disputes over land. Rahu for property acquired in unusual ways or abroad; Ketu for detachment from domestic comforts. In every case the verdict rests on the houses the planet signifies at its three levels, not on its reputation.

Connected Houses and Timing

For property and vehicles combine 4, 11 and 12; for education 4, 9 and 11; for the mother, the writing states no promise group for her welfare, so a question about it is declined free, and our readings do not time anyone's longevity. Promise asks for any one house of the group. Delivery asks for all of it: a Vimshottari period brings the matter only when its Maha, Antar and Pratyantar lords jointly signify every timing house, each lord contributing a different house and the Maha lord supplying at least one. Dasha cannot deliver what the 4th cusp does not promise.

Example: 4th cusp sub lord Jupiter occupying the 11th, in the star of Venus; Venus occupies the 12th and owns the 4th. The planet level supplies the 11th and the star-lord level supplies 4 and 12, so property is promised. Periods in which the three lords between them cover 4, 11 and 12 are listed in time order, unranked. Inside each period the candidate days are those on which the Sun (for a period of months) or the Moon (for a period of days) transits in the sign, star and sub of the period lords: several days, unranked. Transit corroborates the period but never decides the matter, and no reading names "the" date. Every reading also states how many minutes the recorded birth time could move before the 4th cusp sub lord changes, since the 4th cusp shifts by about a degree every four minutes.
